Tesollo DG-5F Robot Hand Featured on IEEE Spectrum with Hanyang University’s “Moonwalk” Robot Hand Video

A research team led by Professor Bae Ji-hoon at Hanyang University ERICA has been featured on the world-renowned robotics media outlet IEEE Spectrum, thanks to their witty parody video titled “Moonwalk with a Robotic Hand.” The team used Tesollo’s DG-5F robotic hand to recreate, in an academic and humorous way, the iconic humanoid Moonwalk demonstration originally performed by KAIST Professor Hae-Won Park’s research group.
Inspired by KAIST’s humanoid robot performance, the video creatively replaces the robot’s legs with dexterous robotic fingers, achieving a “moonwalk” entirely through hand motions. The DG-5F showcases precise control over each of its 20 joints, smoothly gliding its fingers as if the hand itself were walking. Beyond its experimental novelty, the work highlights how humor and creativity can coexist within the field of robotics research.
The project was led by Ph.D. candidate Geun-Hoo Lee from Hanyang University ERICA’s Robotic Cognition and Manipulation Laboratory (RoCogMan Lab) and was conceived as a tribute to Professor Park’s humanoid research at KAIST.
Tesollo’s DG-5F is a five-finger, 20-degree-of-freedom robotic hand designed with human-like proportions and precision joint actuation, widely used in humanoid and manipulation research. This case stands out as a rare and playful example of how technical excellence can meet researchers’ sense of humor to create something memorable.
A Tesollo representative remarked, “We never imagined that the DG-5F would appear in a global media outlet as a ‘dancing hand.’ We look forward to seeing more creative and inspiring experiments from researchers using the DG-5F.”
